I am a current student, I am autistic. At high school I passed exams relatively easily, maths A, maths B, physics, chemistry, even French. English less easily. English aside, it was rules, vocabulary (facts), and some calculation. History I never passed, I don't really understand people and why they do things and dates lack sense. Art was painting, my motor skills lack. I passed technical drawing at Junior level, to the surprise of my teacher. I got to draw straight lines and curves and angles using mechanical aids. When my first daughter was studying chemistry in year 11, I had a look at one of her multiple choice chemistry tests, I would have passed it. I'd done no chemistry since high school 30 years before. She was in the first cohort of the VCE, when it was much criticised for its excessive workload. There is no likelihood I would have passed it. Executive dysfunction is part of my autism. I am a current student in the Advanced Diploma, one unit at a time. I am learning to my satisfaction, you I have no doubt your assessment is "not yet satisfactory." Fortunately, I need specific skills, even if I get a certificate, nobody is going to hire me as an assistant photographer. For TAFE to assess my skills, it needs a better way of testing me. Not just me, surely there are many others who have similar difficulties. I was talking to a son in law this morning, he assed my as autistic twenty years before I did. He works with difficult youth, so I expect lots of autism, ADD, ADHD, OCD etc. It's become clear to me he has no idea.

Do you have training for people who want to be trainers, perhaps in industry and maybe TAFE? Course design, preparation, timing. It's one thing to take a course made by others and presenting it, it's quite another to create the course.

Michelle I am autistic and moderately gifted, so 2e. I am a TAFE student seeking to add to my photography skills. As an autistic, I have some difficulties. One, executive dysfunction, is a serious impediment to getting assignments done. No matter, at my age I don't need a certificate. Photographer teachers and photographers generally talk about story, emotion, mood, beauty. I have no idea what they are talking about. I try to make interesting photographs. When it came to an assignment where these were supposed to matter, the lecturer and I came to an agreement. I'm tall and old, I imagine those factors helped make my case, whether the lecturer was conscious of those factors or not. I'd like to think that a similar nineteen year old autistic would have been as easily accommodated. Photography at TAFE is very into visual diaries. I don't know what they are and I've not asked because it seems such a stupid thing to not know. I recently discovered autistics often need to be shown these things. If students are supposed to produce a visual diary, show them one or have examples for reference. We had an assignment to produce a character portrait. I would have found examples of what's expected helpful too.
